Bethlehem Lutheran School
Bethlehem's Curriculum
The curriculum of Bethlehem Lutheran School meets the prescribed educational requirements of the State of Ohio in compliance with the Ohio Minimum Standards and Ohio Revised Code as well as offering instruction and training in God’s Word and in Christian living. The instruction received by children attending Bethlehem Lutheran School is Bible-based. As Christ is the center of Christian life, so He must be and is the center of Christian education. Psalm 32:8 gives us encouragement in this area, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you”. Accordingly, to enhance the importance of a good spiritual beginning for every child, spiritual growth is encouraged through daily devotions and prayers.

READING/LANGUAGE ARTS

Our Language Arts curriculum for grades K-5 is the A Beka curriculum. A Beka is a strong phonics based reading program. Readers are used to develop reading independence by working on comprehension and writing with understanding. These also teach the student how to write effective sentances and paragraphs. The Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grades use Elements of Literature by Holt, Rinehart, Winston. These students also read novels selected by the teacher. Writing themes include essays, compositions, research reports, and autobiographies.
MATH

Our Math curriculum for grades K-6 is the ABeka Mathematics Program. The ABeka series for K-6 stresses drill and practice in the basics and is a success-oriented program that incorporates manipulative and mental math. The program is based upon incremental development and continual review. The math program for the 7th grade is Holt Mathematics. Students in the 8th grade will either take pre-algebra or algebra depending on their success in 7th grade mathematics.
SCIENCE

We have chosen the Science program published by Harcourt Publishing House for grades K-5. The Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grade textbooks are by Holt, Rinehart, Winston. This is a series of textbooks each focusing on a specific area as required by the Ohio Standards. The science programs help reinforce our belief in the classroom that God is the creator of all things, that God created man in his image, that our bodies are the temple of the Lord and should be taken care of, and that we are to be faithful stewards of the resources and blessings God has put upon the earth for us. Course work includes labwork and experiments. We also schedule regular visits from the Boonshoft Museum’s Exhibits To Go program. In February we hold a Science Fair. Participation is mandatory for all 1-8 grade students and is part of the science grade. Kindergarten students submit a class project but may also choose to enter an individual project as well.
SOCIAL STUDIES

The Social Studies curriculum for grades K-3 is published by MacMillian/McGraw Hill and covers such areas as family, community, citizenship, history, working, government, cultures, and the economy. Our 4-6 grade Social Studies curriculum is published by Harcourt. Fourth grade students study Ohio History, Fifth grade students study American History, and Sixth grade students study World History. The Seventh and Eighth Grade textbooks are by Holt, Rinehart, Winston. The 7th grade studies World History and the 8th Grade studies US History Beginning to 1877.
RELIGION

Our religion curriculum is entitled Voyages and is published by Concordia Publishing House. Other materials include the Bible, Luther’s Small Catechism, hymns from Lutheran Worship, and other supplemental material, as approved by the administration. The religion program is capstoned by the use of the “Weekly Catechesis and Recitation Booklet” prepared by Reverend Arthur M. Casci. Religion in grades K-5 is taught by the classroom teacher. Pastor Casci teaches religion/confirmation instruction to students in grades 6 7 and 8.
ART AND MUSIC

ART- The art curriculum follows Core Knowledge recommendations. MUSIC- The Making Music Curriculum by Silver Burdett is used in grades K-8.
SPANISH

SPANISH- Students in grades 1-5 receive instruction using workbooks published by school specialty publishing. The 6,7,8 grade Spanish Curriculum uses the Middle School Spanish program published by Glencoe Publishing. The goals of the program are to enable students both to improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing in Spanish and to expand their understanding of another culture. Furthermore, through examination of a foreign language, students will also increase their awareness of their own language. Instructional techniques in the program are appropriate to the age of the students and involve, among other approaches, hands-on activities, role playing, games and songs.
TECHNOLOGY

COMPUTER- Students in grades 1-8 receive computer class once each week. Classes begin with basic keyboarding and progress through the use of basic microsoft office programs including word, excell, and power point. Our computer lab boasts 12 state of the art computers; many with flat screen monitors and Windows VISTA. Classrooms are also equipped with computers for student/ class use. MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS receive instruction in technology once each week during math class. The use of calculators, graphing calculators, and other technology tools is emphasized during this time.
